New York City is home to the largest Russian speaking population in the United States. The largest Russian-American communities in New York City are located in Brighton Beach and Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn. Brighton Beach has been nicknamed “Little Odessa” due to its population of Russian -speaking immigrants from Ukraine and Russia.
In this body of work, I decided to explore what are the reasons for people to leave their motherland? The title “COMMUTE” came from the word commu (which is short for communism). As a photographer and filmmaker, I challenged myself to learn how to approach strangers and ask about their lives. It is a combination of photographs and short documentaries about certain individuals, where I explore their personalities, hear their stories and deliver you beautiful content of both still and motion picture.
